Burnet team tennis leans on new players

The Burnet High School team tennis team lost to Cameron Yoe 18-1 Sept. 5 in District 25-4A play.

“Cameron had many good players top to bottom,” coach Benjamin Boorman said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge because Cameron knocked us out of the playoffs last year.”

Robyn Massey and Alex Burns won Burnet’s only match by taking the third-set tiebreaker 10-8.

“(They) took the best girls from Yoe to the wire,” Boorman said.

Callen Smith and Luke Suchomel fought hard against Cameron’s top talent as well, the coach said, while Jareyli Luna and Gabby Allbritton “continue to show great promise and are improving each week.”

He also noted the play of Nick Dietrich and Charlie Castillo and Eryn Halford and Sarah-Rose Smith-Perez.

“Nick Dietrich and Charlie Castillo are a great partnership and are working hard to get back to their winning ways they saw in week one,” Boorman said. “Eryn Halford and Sarah-Rose Smith-Perez bring their smiles and passion to each match they play.”

One big obstacle was player availability. Burnet forfeited mixed doubles and two couldn’t play because of illness. So Tanner Sutton and Isaac Vega-Palacios were elevated and “did a great job stepping up from junior varsity to play varsity matches.”

“The boys who stepped in had wonderful attitudes and embraced the challenge,” Boorman said.

Savannah Reay “was able to play her first JV match of the season and learned quite a bit.”

Burnet also lost to Little River Academy and Belton New Tech in district play.

Burnet welcomes Salado at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.
